Dedicated To Mr. Ed Matlack On His Birthday

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Normally for Ed on this day, I would wisecrack and call him an old fart. But not this time and maybe never again for life is fickle from beginning to end.

Dedicated To Mr. Ed Matlack On His Birthday

How many years has it been Sir since on the phone we first spoke?
How many times have you called me a redneck while you continued to take a toke?

Often over the years I think this would have been our last conversation,
Until the other day your voice I did hear.
You dear Sir over these last few years have seen too much and have gained strength through trepidation and fear.

Life is sometimes cruel and often very unkind,
Yet you have sustained, you have survived to this your special DAY through many prayers sent your way.
You have seen more than most who will read this post.

Even though I know in brotherhood we both grow old.
What shall we seek?
Shall we seek just the day or strive to find our peace
And walk together on the streets of gold.

You have been through much and yet you still survived.
You are stronger than you think and our choices in life are many…
I know you will catch my drift, but cling to that little thing that I sent you as a gift,
For living and loving amongst the few are plenty.

Nevertheless, I still can not resist;
Happy Birthday you old fart…
Always with prayer for you in my heart.

You are the master at crafting fine tributes. I will toast you on your effort to cheer others up with your poetry and your hard-working life in a factory with no pity. May you live long and prosper for helping souls like the Jersey Devil.

He's Definitely An Old Fart - and he has been for a very long time!

But Happy, Happy Birthday To Him!

A very fine birthday tribute to Mr. Ed
From another old fart
We are not getting younger Mr. Ed
Ha, so let's rejoice "to life" and for not being really dead
For we are able to live another year to write poems instead
Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Mr. Ed
