Eventually, they say,
some fish left the water
and began to live on dry land.
How the fish got into the water
in the first place, and why
they could possibly have wanted
to live on dry land,
remain mysteries.
And then there are the
countless convenient mutations,
and Natural Selection,
(whereby only the fittest survive),
all of which depend entirely
upon chance, and through
which processes have developed
all the incredible creatures
which populate our present world,
including humankind, with our
big brains, opposable thumbs
and prodigious arrogance,
whereby we take pride in
our ability to dominate
all the rest of creation, due to
a series of random events
and an accident of birth.
So many miracles to accept
as a matter of fact; the biggest
of them all being that so many
religious folks consider
the Theory of Evolution
an enemy of faith.
