Two birdhouses I hung from my favorite tree
Red for you, blue for me.
The wind blew strong and then I found
Pieces of my heart, lying on the ground.
Now blue hangs alone, no tenants this year
Hanging there like a big blue tear.
Two Birdhouses surely does have an interpretive element to it. Consensus in comments prevalently refers to relationship, and yet this could be about the red/blue national relationship division, in which case, even in these six lines I was anticipating the two both breaking and a new ‘purple’ one rehung. Ahhh, isn’t it neat to see the different viewpoints. The ‘wind of division’ has each bird house, wind chime, flag, weathervane vulnerable to loss. I find this musical, meaningful, symbolic.
