I wandered by the brook at dusk
No sight, nor stir from ‘cross the fields
When borne upon night’s earthy musk
Heard echoes from afar, revealed
It came from deep amongst the trees
Soft gypsy music on the breeze
I searched to see from whence it came
‘Oh, exquisite sound! Caress my ear!’
My eye beheld a vivid flame
Which warmed my soul and drew me near
I huddled down and hugged my knees
Observing from beyond the trees
A plume of campfire smoke betrayed
The heart of vision’s flickering light
On olive faces shadows played
Whilst music drifted on the night
From where I sat ‘gainst roots of trees
I watched the shadow clad gypsies
Guitar strings sung sweet melodies
Flamenco flares enhanced their song
A violin uttered harmonies
Soft voices crooned in mother tongue
Their words, like magic spells could tease
The sleeping birds down from the trees
Then swarthy face with twinkling eyes
Called out in words I could not hear
A young girl reached toward the skies
And swayed her hips to all revere
Her vibrant skirts whirled o’er her knees
She danced with passion ‘mid the trees
At last I sought to take a breath
As fire’s flames grew less enthused
The ground grown cold and damp beneath
My hiding place from where I mused
I crept home, bearing memories
Of gypsies, dancing, amongst the trees.
