Markedly Non-Spiritual

Poem Artwork

Great oaken door - ajar, benign

The dark within

Bade me ‘come in’

I went inside to seek a sign

This faith was strong

Did I belong?

I asked the Lord and Saints each one

Do you see me?

Do you feel me?

Their voices, oddly silent, drone

You’re nowhere near

We’re just not here

To each in turn I pled my case

Can you hear me?

Do you know me?

Their eyes of stone sought far off place

You’re all alone

You’re on your own

At last I turned towards to the door

My plan gone cold

My faith unsold

With final prayer across the floor

To touch my heart

As I depart

I stepped into the light of sun

With no amends

No new-found friends

I left this place as I’d begun

But more aware

No comfort there.

 Reviews of "Cathedral"

As others of us have found in our quest for spiritual peace, the comfort resounds not in close proximity to those self-proclaiming a connection to that which--many in vestments, as well as those in white shirts fluttering atop their bicycles--deem an exclusive privilege bequeathed the "faithful." The "quest" for spiritual wealth seems an open right to everyone, needing not a go-between-judge, or particular sheltering beneath worshiping spired cover. Rather--as the subtext of your exploration here suggests--spiritual omniscience is held by Nature for our discovery in a myriad of opportunities. History is full of such moments, bringing tranquility to both the religious and the atheist. "No comfort there" is the oft felt, but seldom uttered reality of many. Thank you for the simple, yet poignant verity of everyday for the many.

This is an amazing poem, Ruan, absolutely amazing. There is not one word there which shouldn't be there. Each verse said what it was supposed to say. The truth unveiled itself completely and devoid of any spiritual trash talk . . . Saving this . . .

A simple truth: Cathedrals are monuments to men. Can't compare to a sunset. Amen.
