Poem Artwork

Muffled rumble in the distance

Lightning flashes softly flicker

Night air whispers promises of impending drama

Dark skies shiver, as approaches, the battle of Nature’s will

Unrest in the clouds

Distant hills visible for just a moment, and then gone

Ultra-violet dances on the tree-line

More vibrant now, fierce, forking suddenly ‘cross the open field

The land waits with bated breath for the first crash of nature’s war

Which element will fire the first shot!

Arcing white light leaves impressions of shadow in its wake

Casting fleeting glimpses of a neon green horizon

Thunder growls ominously overhead,

Its echoes leave the ground shuddering in anticipation

Platinum sheets now obliterate the view

Great blazing shards, hurled into the ground

Searing light penetrates the night

...and, amid mighty crack of deliverance,

Clouds breach to bestow their much needed gift

Stark radiance lays tracks, whilst resonance bellows its wrath

As all beneath cower, afraid

White heat retaliates and all is laid bare

They battle on, these two awe-inspiring warriors

Rending the air with expressions of strength and rage

Their blood-shed nourishing the dry summer earth

Until at last their potency fades.

Their parting shots mellowed by the breath of wind

...which drives them apart. All is calm once again

And in celebration

...the smell of earth, freshly bathed, permeates all.

I've had many a nightmare/dream with these essential ingredients present. Whether conscious or subconscious, these images resonate for those willing to accept the paradox of pain and joy.

Love the smell of earth, freshly bathed, after a storm.

You have danced with the gods in your description of the two forces of the same: thunder and lightning. It brought to mind my many experiences with this mighty force, just now being understood as never before.

That freshly bathed smell is nitrous oxide and nitric acid, fertilizing the land that gave the air its oxygen along with ozone created by the heat of the lightning flash. The cycle of nature at its finest.

This is the best verbal description of a storm I've ever read, although admittedly I can't recall another. But until another great one comes along, you get 10's across the board!

You have just described today in the swamp. There was thunder so loud that it had my mutt barking her head off trying to scare it away. She's never done that before, she isn't afraid of thunder, but THAT thunder was off the chart. Yep. You described what has been going on in Thibodaux, Louisiana. It's all your fault. Heh.Heh
