Dedicated to a certain person I know, who works in such an environment and is often treated this way.

Poem Artwork

Just ‘cause I’m not educated and don’t lean hard on my degree

Don’t have a mouth that’s full of plums, and I don’t expect a legacy

I haven’t got a high diploma, nor strings of grades that qualify

My education was life’s journey, but it’s not enough to mollify...

...those hardened snobs who stand aloof and call me unacceptable

Who tell me that I don’t fit in, that I’ve failed at ‘respectable’

I may not have their high-brow views. Nor is my mind packed full of stuff...

...that comes from someone else’s books. It doesn’t mean I’m full of fluff

And just because they’re highly rated, whilst I must learn things as I go

And just because I’m not an expert, robbing folk, just ‘cause I know

It doesn’t mean I’m dull and stupid. It doesn’t mean I’m valued less

When common sense becomes essential, they’re quick to call my worthiness

Yes, there they are, to plead and beg, persuade me to their tragic cause

My helping hand, a weight in gold, is wanted then - and just because...

...my journey’s been a wealth of learning useful things for every day

Like how to get round life’s dilemmas, how to find a better way

So all in all, I’m just as clever, just as smart as all of them

‘cause they can’t do what I do, see - but what they see, they fast condemn

Write off as brainless foolery. Discount its use ...until next time

...they need a hand to help them out - ‘til then, I’ll not be worth a dime

They gossip, when they don’t ignore me, shun me and avoid my eye

But sure enough, when trouble strikes, I’m the one they’ll want come by

Build it, fix it, make it right, in oh so many countless ways

Never do they stop to think of how I spend my lonely days

But for all the pain their manner causes, all that looking down their nose

It’s mine to be the bigger man – forgive them, what their faults disclose.

Points well made, Ruan. My father was a "janitor" and he had little formal schooling but he was well read and self-educated and had a lot more "on the ball" than a lot of "degree holders" that I have known. Thank you. Love, peace, and best wishes,

Regis

Reminds me of Kipling: "Though I've belted you and flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!" You are in good company with one of the best poet-novelist of all time. Superb!

I love your range of style and subject. This one is unique and appropriate for our times. I remember my father telling me that I needed to get a college education and not end up a truck driver like him. His earnings on the year he retired… 1982 were the same as my earnings on the year that I retired 2011. The difference between then and now is that ground-level support jobs that don't require an education are devalued much more than they were in 1982. And those jobs are needed more than ever as upward mobile children of every generation turn their backs on "real" work, opting for a "position" setting themselves apart from those they consider riffraff. It's a sad state of affairs that you have nicely exposed in your poem.

When I needed help in my job (I was given no assistance), the custodians were most helpful and generous. Higher ups would always call for a custodian rather than just help me themselves. Most tended to lack any form of empathy while the custodians seemed to immediately understand my need for assistance.

Good poem! I was a janitor. Not really a bad job. Just something that needs to be done. However, I am now working for the university. But I am still a janitor at home...

Ruan,

This is a story everyone should think about and be more respectful to those who do the REAL work behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing!

Love and blessings,
Linda
