Poem Artwork

She won’t heed the people who think they know her

She won’t let their blinkered views dampen her dreams

She’s lost, and she’s lost, then she lost again

Each one, a bigger blow than the last, it seems

Each tearing a greater hole, where her heart used to be

Until her distant dreams were all she could see.

She’ll not listen to what her adversaries think

She’ll not let their judgements cause her to squirm

They’ve bound, and they’ve ground, and they’ve devastated

Diminished her fragile resolve to stand firm

Laying waste to all that she attempted to see

Until those distant dreams were all she could be

Treacherous people stripped her of all faith

Who should she be, after the deaths of those she loved?

So many voices share their blinkered opinions

But none who’ll consider ‘life’ in her shoe and glove

Why must they meddle and not let her be?

Must decline toxic input and set herself free

Short, sharp and hard, she must rally her point

With her spirit now crushed and all hope dressed in grey

‘Don’t waste your time – I am not who you think

I’ll gather what’s mine and go far, far away

Where I can, at last, simply dream to be me

And know how it feels when I can dream to be free.

...your poem introduces a sense of gripping excitement and almost a deadline into the narrative to act...and bring back the substance that lays between a dream and reality of life...Thank you Ruan, for sharing your poem.

This is so sad, but so like my life too, i can relate, right now, I've accepted it's to be only me in life now. Hard to do but hadto let go.

Harsh and real but that is the best kind of poetry, Ruan. Most meaningful. Love and best wishes to you,

A shattering revelation. I certainly hope that it is literary muse and not reality. I'm so looking forward to the continuation of your book in stories.

We have wasted our time by not listening to ourselves
for we know who we are and what we want,(dreams.) Always
enjoy whatever you pen, Ruan!

Always,

Deborah

We must all continue to 'dream to be me; and dream to be free'

You seem to be relating a tale here of many others, including yourself...? Hope things brighten up for "her" & "she" can get on with living...-e-

"Something to do, someone to love, something to look forward to" seem to be the essentials to a life worth living. Said by someone wiser than me. You've captured two of the three elements in this stirring poem.

As your words so adroitly proclaim, to be where one can dream to be free is all many have as their hope. With so many institutions and individuals telling us how to be, what to be, and why we should be whatever, it is the free spirit of this poems narrative that is most important. Well penned. Good to read you again.

Sadness within this poem, Ruan, but a strong, gritty image of her shows through. The last four lines, is something positive and should be done right away . . .

Beside Still Waters by Jill Eisnaugle

Each person is but a grain of sand resting beside the sea. This thought sets the tone for Jill Eisnaugle’s latest poetry collection, Beside Still Waters.
