The Christmas Cactus
leaned in the direction
of her slanted back porch.
Many clay pots with healthy
varieties of ferns and flowers
lived throughout the winter
in the windowed room.

She had a gift for growing
things, inside and out.
But she was gone and
the Christmas Cactus seemed
to have expired, as she had.
It was withered and appeared
to hold no life.

I wanted to toss the cactus
out of the door.
I picked up the pot,
opened the heavy door
and stopped.
I set the plant back on the table.

We left that day, after going through
some of her things.
After looking around at ninety-eight
years of what her life brought
to the home.

Three days after she died,
we went back to the large old house.
I walked through the musty
living room, dining room and kitchen.
The door to the plant room felt cold.
I turned the doorknob and looked in.
The Christmas Cactus was on fire with vibrant blooms
spilling over the pot and dropping bright petals
onto the old painted wooden floor.

As Regis says, the symbolism and yet the real-life portraiture you have cleverly painted us here with your words, Janet, not only draws us into the details of this particular story, but perhaps inspires us to see with fresh eyes the interlinking of the natural and metaphysical in our own lives: you exhibit well the artist in you: enabling others to see with your eyes, and to find in their own lives the life you paint. Thank you for this uplifting piece. Bless you. Kate xx

This happened to me a number of times with various plants that I thought had died... it's like they KNOW, they read our thoughts and KNOW... I have a 35 year old geranium that belonged to my husband's grandmother. We were going to toss it because it seemed dead. A few days later it was sprouting new growth all over it. Today, 15 years later, it's huge and gorgeous. I named it Grandfather.

My understanding is the Christmas Cactus didn't want to be tossed and had to show you there was life left within it's seeming brown deadened spines. RESURRECTION beautifully portrays the Christmas Cactus's struggle and success. I bet you were amazed!!

This is beautifully told and reminds me a lot of a plant of a person that I did companion work for. It bloomed too and my mother had these plants as well.

exceptionally well told, Janet ... the cactus christmas tree worked really well as a double enterdre to the miraculous callousness of life's progression and the spirit encompassing the household ... the mood and imagery are extrememly crisp and the atmosphere you've painted is meaningful and true to life ...

kudos!

Janet, exquisite imagery that ends with the last lines as a glorious finale! Though poignant, a joy to read!
