She wore nothing but lipstick
upon her sun-kissed face.
Graceful gray wisps of hair
wandered from her long loose braid
and played around her ears.
Bright speckles filtered through
her straw hat to highlight smile and frown lines,
permanently imprinted freckles
from summers of childhood play.
Seventy years had been planned for her,
maybe more, hopefully more.
She held her husband’s hand
and reflected upon their romance
that continues and grows.
His contagious laughter,
quick wit and engrossing stories.
Her bad cooking, creative moods
and outspoken nature.
Movies together and reading the same books.
Memories to replay in her mind’s eye.
And delirious laughter in the moment.
She feels rough and smooth textures
on seashells he brings to her.
She hears the delightful voices of their grandchildren.
Her sons tell her that her hair is turning gray.
All those years of painting and living
inside of rich colors are gone now.
Seeing and feeling the brushes slosh
in water and make layers upon layers of pigment.
Decorating their home and wearing painterly hues.
She hopes he is purchasing colorful clothes to drape around her body.
She thinks he is because he knows her so well.
She sits on the sand and feels the breeze,
hears the mighty ocean.
His skin against hers is comforting. She digs her fingers in the cool sand
and enjoys the senses that remain in this life.
Her only tube of color is lipstick now
and she applies it with a steady hand.
She is happy because seeing isn’t everything, but believing is.
There are beautiful people that write impressively; some extraordinaries, and many most excellent, but You, Poet,
You have the quills that dance, talk, and describe the action
and the subject in a colorful depiction of lively form.
I am polishing my creative tools with the perfume of Your writings; and am nourishing my mind with the contents of Your works.
May The Mother-Poet keep You in good health
through a long creative life.
Janet - If you will permit a personal note here; your lady is almost a living model of the wife who was my life. Your words are so accurate and fitting, I'm about to say that you must have been looking over our shoulder. This a high drama in the peace and gentility of a wonderful life, recalled. You should take this one and submit copies to the best poetry magaines. The world should read such a tribute to older women who have lived well for us. (However, my wife was a very good cook, but not an accomplished painter.) I love this one. - Bill
This literally moved me so deeply, I weep. Seriously. I have to go with Eileen... this is totally magical and the sheer breadth of its depth and scope is stunning. Yet another cinematic and highly vivid portrait and screenplay from the ink and brushes of your most exquisite mind, Janet. TY and bless you. Kate xx
This is one vivid and awe inspiring piece you have created and developed here. It actually walks the reader through the subjects life to the sad but hopeful conclusion. I could smell the salt in the air, feel the grit of sand on her finger tips and see the lipstick glisten on her lips. Poems like these are rare, well done

My dear friend there will be MANY MANY more than 70....trust me. And this poem is just plain beautiful - the reflection of life lived through good and bad times but in the end spent with your very best friend. Just as it should be. This poetic piece bursts with love and longing, and has been painted as only you could do with your vivid paint strokes and gentle words.
Accepted for whom she is...now that's love. Beautifully written Ode to True Romance! Well done!

Astounding piece of poetical musing here, Janet. This is a sorta like projecting into the future kind of poem that just make a body (southern for person, but you knew that) feel good. Excellent.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
