I can picture clint Eastwood standing alone in the desterted main (only) street, black hat, poncho, cigarillo gripped between his tight lips.
Loved it.
Could be any small deserted town. Could be a snake, they slither. And why are the people trancelike?
Perhaps we are talking about people trancelike in the great expanse of Midwest drought clinging to old ideas in a trance like daze of the same old same old routine, continuing the way they always do, nothing in between. Don't see the snake for the sand.
