Assumption of Power

I spoke directly with a few evacuated folks from New Orleans...from that conversation came this poem...

Assumption of Power…

They took it upon themselves,

To claim the right of power,

Heard it directly from survivors,

Of New Orleans trip down to hell…

A police department from the “west bank”,

A town called Gretna (sp?), no reason do we have to them thank,

They used their authority with their police chiefs permission,

To keep people out of their dry town, they smell quite rank…

A barricade at the foot of a bridge,

Allowing no one to cross,

Guns fired over the heads of those that try,

I know one town I will never visit as a tourist & why…

Granted it was a bad situation,

Quite possibly the worst of late for our nation,

But to take away a chance for refuge was beyond their station,

Forced to turn around were these people, both black and white,

All these officers and their chief should be prosecuted or fired,

That was not the job they were given or otherwise for hired…

The "lifeboat ethic" made real and personal. Well done.

The relevance or irrelevance of poetry is something that has often been debated in cultural circles but poems such as ASSUMPTION OF POWER, along with the stream of writings from Jerry Bolton and others, demonstrate that poetry maintains considerable power to bear and preserve witness to the most significant events of our life and times, whether something small and private like a first kiss or something monumentally destructive like the lasting results of a hurricane named Katrina.
