Poem Artwork

High or low tide,

They come to stand by my side,

Of captains & crewmen they are from the past,

Down to the sea in ships, died within the seas grasp…

They stand watch with the young,

Never did they know of or care for Jung,

Their lives the sea, their ship their only true one,

Wives and babies they did leave on shore,

To plod the seas in steamers with masted fore’s…

No heaven for them, nor hell,

To the oceans their stories they tell,

Of great ships and seamen, some overboard fell,

Never arriving late for their watch,

Ready before the ringing of the ships bell…

The past their time,

Though in the present into the rigging they climb,

Training the new with their extensive knowledge,

Better to learn on the job than going to college…

This one struck a personal note with me. My father was a merchant seaman in his younger days. He rode the liberty ships between the US and Europe in World War II, and also served with the Merchant Marine during the Korean war (not to mention two brothers that are sea captains, and a brother-in-law. And my sister lived at sea for five years.) Man and the sea. Strange company. Great write. Beautiful picture. Love Blue

A marvelous tribute to those sailors of the past, my friend. And where are you finding such fabulous graphics? - this one is truly fantastic.

I do love and agree with the way you put this, Ed. The graphic image very effectively complements your words. Merci, mon ami. Love and peace,

Ed, I love the pic and poem matches it well. It reminded me of an incident about my brother when he first went to sea. He was in the merchant marine, once while he was at the wheel, in China sea, during a heavy fog,he hit a junk, that had a family on it.There were many of them and whole families lived on them, so it wasn't unusual, though sad. He said they couldn't stop or anything, and it was a harrowing experience that troubled him for the rest of his life. He made it to first mate before he finally left the sea, but he loved it. My uncle was a merchant seaman also as a Captain. He retired and lived in Seaside hgts until he died in the early nineties. That's the last time i was to the Jersey shore.

Those tides are mysterious, the stories they could tell. I study extensively ship wrecks of the past and the salvage. The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald, the Titanic, the Graveyard of the Spanish Galleons, the Tolosa, the Guadalupe, Spanish ships that spilled many tons of quicksilver, mercury that would be worth well over $5 million today. It is amazing that 17th century shipwrecks have been found with glass bottles of wine intact and even some olive bottles that the liquid dissolved, but the pit remains in the bottle. The ghosts of the sea are the spirits of the ones who died at sea, sending them to their watery graves. Nice write, Ed.
