Empty Children

I saw a family standing on the side of a road today with signs stating they will work for food/loging, little kids, that just tore my heart out & I can't get it out of my head, so had to just write something...

  “EMPTY CHILDREN”

Children in the world grow hungrier by the minute,

Hungry, not only for food, but also for knowledge,

Children that go to bed hungry,

Children that go to bed cold,

Children that go to bed & dream tragically empty dreams…

Emptiness pervades the very being,

Surrounded by nothingness,

Empty headed, are they.

Empty pockets,

Empty sky,

Empty ocean,

Empty thoughts,

Empty ambitions,

Empty handed, are they.

And these same children are our legacy, our next generation, our progeny,

Are we to let them die from starvation?

Are we to let them die from lack of knowledge?

Let me die so that they may live…

(ed)

Ah, so many like this--why? we ask. We should check our own backyards. Well done, Ed.
