A poem about Sundowning. As a side note, my grandfather suffers from Alzheimer's. He has pretty much lost 50 years of his life. My only hope as my family goes through this process with him is that we will be able to learn from and help others along the way.

Hi, I'm Sundowning
If you have Dementia or Alzheimer's we may have met
I'm frustrating, irritating, and I will leave you agitated Confusion comes easy for me Did I mention that I crave those late afternoon and evening visits? The day time is so overrated Did I see you pacing the floor again? Well, that is me keeping you restless Are you feeling moody and misbehaving? Well, that is one of my specialties Unfortunately only 20-45% of Alzheimer's patients suffer from me That truly is a lot of people though if you are the caregiver I love myself a good caregiver Someone else to weigh down, upset, and frustrate So if you want a real experience... Turn to me! I vow to keep life interesting by restless leaps and bounds And to keep your loved one even more confused You can thank me later... After you go searching for your loved one again
My grandmother had Alzheimer's syndrome for five years before she died. I don't think she was a "sundowner" although she became very religious to the point of aggravation. She was in a nursing hospital where she received very good care, but I don't recall her being agitated, restless, or anything like that. When I visited her three times coming from very far away, she was merely smiling and eating and not much else.
As far as I know, I have no dementia yet, but my physical condition is getting so difficult that it is causing much concern among my caregivers. Making me warm and comfortable so that I can sleep is a major undertaking.
My mom had Alzheimer's. I've heard this disease described as going through a house and turning off the lights one by one, and that's an accurate description. Having to put my mom in a nursing home was the hardest thing I've ever done, but try to take care of her on our own was really starting to take a toll on all of us. When the end came, the only person my mom could recognize or remember was me. I only hope this disease isn't in my future. Nobody deserves to go out like that.

I empathize. My step son has several mental issues. He cannot laugh, cannot cry, does not ask for anything, and forgets everything.
