As I sat and admired this old wooden door that was waiting to be tossed, it revealed a final secret that made me smile!

Poem Artwork

The old wooden door lay lifeless and gray

Long removed from the place where it always stayed

The hinges that used to hold it in place

No longer were there, now just empty space

The days, long gone when it used to swing

Open wide for the children and the friends that they'd bring

There was a time when the paint was so new

And the door never tired watching families that grew

The knob frozen stiff no longer did turn

No key in the lock, no more secrets to learn

No more days when it kept all the Spring rains at bay

No opening to morning and new light of day

It seemed that it's usefulness had finally run out

What good was it now; a purpose without

Destined to decay or be thanklessly tossed

The only hope that remained was the form of the cross

I love it, Jean. It was good all the way through, and the "form of the cross" was a complete surprise! Of course, I had to check to see what you were talking about, thinking you may be imagining a cross on the door. There's a lot of insight and precious memories in your old door, and a beautiful surprise when one takes the time to realize it.

...wonderful poem-metaphor...Jean...indeed the "old wooden door" speaks clear and loud.. "it is neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so"...and the carved shape of the cross on it....I guess...like Christians crossing their hearts...signifying sincerity and a wealth of knowledge...saying to us all...either entering nor leaving the space...set apart by few...from the outside world...don't loose your confidence..."beauty's in the eye of beholder"...keep an open mind in your own situation...Sort of a psychological nudge towards a greater good/purpose/self-esteem/you name it...which is not the same for everyone...Thanks for sharing your verse.

A very unique and creative poem. Especially the observation and metaphor at the end.

I think that this door, along with many others like it, will be resurrected by someone seeking its patina as a decoration in a brand-new loft or other place where such interesting artifacts and architectural details become once again, new and interesting.

An interesting write about something that most of us do not even notice when we use it...without a door there would be no egress or entrance, without that same door all that we own would be open to the world...a very good posting, young lady...will have to try to keep an out for you...-e-
