The Old Horse
Yeah, the rain was cold under that old oak tree;
Wish he’d a been able to listen to me,
That Fir was good shelter, but he cut it down,
Said it caused allergies to folks all around,
But it cut out the rain and cold north wind,
Should have built a lean-to I could get in,
But no I’m a horse, I’m supposed to be tough,
And take the bad weather , even when it is rough,
For a good many years I’ve made it outside,
And always been able to give a good ride,
But age has got to me, I’m swaybacked and old,
I’m no longer able to withstand the cold,
We always made the headlines when I was young,
There with the winners, I was always among,
Jackpots, big money and trophies we won,
He took all the glory , for what we had done,
I stood in the cold rain when the truck came around,
I had no idea for where I was bound,
Down at the Auction, I’d soon learn my fate,
I was unloaded at the killer horse gate,
Guess I had a good life ; shouldn’t complain,
Wish I could get out of this cold, cold rain,
Head down and dejected ; I sure was a sight,
It’ll maybe be all over after tonight,
Shaking and coughing, then two little kids,
Came in to pet me ; Couldn’t believe what they did,
Said Daddy He’s sick and he needs a warm place to stay,
You’ve got lots of room and lots of good hay,
Momma can fix him , I know she will,
She’ll know what to feed him with some kind of pill,
He really needs us, Daddy Can’t you see,
You promised us a horse ,little Jeannie and me,
Dad said ‘ just an ol’nag ; gotta be eighteen or more,
I don’t know kids, he’s awful skinny and poor”,
But Daddy ,He ain’t as old as Mom or you,
And Jeannie and I don’t need one that’s new,
Besides Mommy’s always wanting to be skinny,
She says eating’s why her dresses are so many,
You said we could pick a horse and we’re pickin him.’
The Daddy argued on but knew he couldn’t win,
A promise is a promise, he couldn’t back out on them,
“ Tonight I’ll bid on ol’Bones when they bring him in,
He’ll go for Killer money so I can’t lose a lot,
The kids will be happy ;but, Wait till Mom sees what I got,”
She weren’t impressed with me , but for thirty bucks or so,
The girls were crying happy , they’d let everybody know,
Mighty proud the Mom and Daddy were of their two little girls,
Love and care was still alive within our crazy world,
The stable warm, and there was hay and grain,
A really blessed change from all that cold and rain,
I’ll serve these little angels with my all until I die,
They’ll know that on my last day , I gave it my best try,
Before they left the stable; I got a hug and kiss,
Horse Heaven doesn’t get a whole lot better now than this.

I've often wondered about wild horses. I wonder how long they live in the wild and how they can endure living probably as far north as Alberta when it drops down below zero. From what I heard, the mustangs taken from the wild are the best quarter horses. A good reason to believe that natural selection is a powerful way to improve a breed.
The desert is probably the harshest environment of all. Probably why Arabians are such a fine breed of horse.

Love ya!

Needless to say I really like this one.
