LOVE
BY
Liz Larrabee
I love you as the shore loves
The constancy of the sea,
As the horizon loves the thrust
Of the mountain’s folds and peaks.
I love you as the symphony
Loves the rhapsody of violins,
As the thunder loves the echo of its rage.
I need you as the wolf’s call needs the wind
To summon its mate to the moon,
As the rose needs roots to shelter its soul,
As the rooster’s crowing craves the dawn.
I love you as daybreak loves the rays of the sun,
Need you as dusk needs the evening star.
I love you, need you, as wine the grape,
As my heart this passion for which it beats.
And when I long for a memory at life’s end
Your face will be the portrait I take with me.
Your voice will be my chariot.
My last breath will be yours.
