Once I was, I was something, I was a soldier fighting for freedom

It was one of the many nights too much to drink watching protesters

in park smoking weed building up courage to burn another flag

Tall and hard I stand gun molded into my right hand

Sun burns my soul as the rain and snow pelt my skin

I died next to my friend in swamp of rice so long ago

Wife and child cried because I never came back home

Pigeons dance and shit on me just as most of you have done

Staggered filled with a returning soldiers pride gonna teach

a thing or two walked right into a statue of a soldier

Freedom the cost of a child sent to die for your pride

In the mark you place my name on a wall forgive the guilt

Rose placed at my feet lies haunt me in the grave unmarked

Bones scream right or wrong why so much for so little

Hate burned forever in the shackles of a drug-ridden soldier

Fell down and cried saw so many hearts laid to waste for faith

my freedom choice a bottle of jack and life not worth living

Acid pours down on the land brother can you find me a hand

How long must the rest of you pay for the guilt I left you

Brother I know you know and feel loss of value sold troubled soul

Watched as the life drained out in the streets I thought were free

Death comes more than once it is as on going as the march of time

Years pass almost forty so small a piece of my life so much pain

and memory burned into my soul I never will be free again

Tall and hard I stand gun molded into my right hand

Sun burns my soul as the rain and snow pelt my skin

I died next to my friend in swamp of rice so long ago

Wife and child cried because I never came back home

Pigeons dance and shit on me just as most of you have done

Pigeons don’t know any better

A very poignant write and this one bears reading again. Yes pigeons don't know any better but people do.
