I hear in teh distance...it comes for me

Lonely as the wind it comes on train that I have ridden before
slowly as a silent night it brings a message from inside my heart
keeping a world at bay in sad places long gone I am at home
will you offer me a needed drink of the water of human kindness
I just need a place to sleep maybe a corner there on the floor
Old dog licks my face as we share a spot by the pot-belly stove
Coffee black strong enough to take the chill out of these bones

Wind howls as the banshee comes to take me to a final resting place
in this house a friendly hand remembers me allows me to leave in grace
bible and candle there organ playing soft in my mind angels intervene
sweet the smell of labor worked turned the life of the land beauty seen
debt to pay in the morning light as the sun finds its way to this old soul
children gather round as I tell smiling faces the many stories of the road
pastor places his hand on my arm it is time to move on and spread the dream

Train is rolling slow hand reaches down and pulls him in an empty car
voice is clear as he leaves behind the family of souls and heads for a star
gift of life to be shared in the vision laid of an old man going home
cast not a rock or a stone for the sin was paid for long ago
rest and sleep in the soft stray as the voices of life well talk on
in the peace of the rolling train with the hundreds before he is done
old dog licks his face as crying children look on grandpa has gone home

This is a heart touching and powerful tribute, Walter. Very nicely written, though the font is so small I had to cut and paste to WORD to make it easier to read.
Take care,
Sherry
