Dirt track and shine hold hands at the fair

Captain was working on chaw
saw old Jhonny driving like his paw
a track of dirt winding through the hills
if the mountain won't kill ja the devil will

Jhonny was a ridge runner white as light his load
silver bullet hauling liquid gold
a version of freedom
as young as his soul
rest of us are just getting old

From scales of Alabam to the mountains
of the freedom man
a vision of love
he carries by his side
she is the wisdom
caught in his lonely ride

Faster than grease lightning
Devil by his side
Angel in the back seat
going for a ride

Hearse a coming down from the sky
planning on taking old Jhonny for a ride
Devil waves him off
Angel waves goodbye

Jhonny leaves the hearse in the creek
not ready yet to die
fingers grab another set of gears
Devil wipes his brow excitement and fear
Angel takes the wheel
Wants that real human feel

Jhonny now back in control
load dumped
everybody is going home

In the evening running the ridge
pieces of heaven and hell wanted to live
Jhonny was the driver of the team
she was the lover and savior of the dream

Captain was working on chaw
saw old Jhonny driving like his paw
a track of dirt winding through the hills
if the mountain won't kill ja the devil will

But on this evening it was just a ride
heart stopping excitement with a bit
of racers pride...

Sitting on the back porch shooting the bull
Devil on the wrong shoulder angel on the left
Both pushing for another ride

Jhonny girl says, "Jhonny now you get here inside
Let them boys go alone if they must ride"
