Selfish being that I am
I stood by holding a friend
As October wind kissed our face

It had been years since our last embrace
A thousand memories time it had erased
I was honored to be at this place

Her hand was old and course
Years of work had left its mark
Still full of hope was her heart

I watched a rainbow of leaves swirl up
I had wished that I could remove her bitter cup

It was to late for my remorse
Old man in misfit clothes played taps
The sound chilled my very soul

She whispered in my ear its time to go
The wonder of an autumn day
Almost took my breath a way

I walked with weaken step
Tears rolled down my cheek
I tried to keep my pain buried deep

Softly I wept
She steadies my step
Guided me to my home

Stayed so I would not be alone
Fire in the fireplace warms
I hold her close

No words, she knows
Through the window I see
Children playing in the leaves

Her presence comforts me
Our son is gone
To another home
Buried deep beneath the ground
