At The Back Of The Class

Another poem I wrote as my children were growing up. I always wanted to encourage them to love reading and also find humor in learning as well.

         Get Back To Class!

At the back of the class I
picked my seat,
hoping the teacher wouldn't
call on me.
While the kids were learning bout
Washington and Lincoln,
when the lunch bell would ring
is what I was thinking.
Then all at once and
out of the blue,
Miss Rushing said, "Tommy this
question's for you."
I got kind of nervous and
had to think quick,
so I grabbed at my tummy
and said, "I feel sick."
What a genius I am it's
the perfect escape,
to the nurse I went with a belly ache.
I giggled and chuckled as
I walked down the hall,
knowing I wasn't really sick at all.
It was almost to easy
I must confess,
fooling nurse Weebler was
the ultimate test.
When I opened the door I
put on a frown,
tried to look ill and held
my head down.
"Come in young man and
sit on the bench,
give me a minute and I'll
take your temp."
I thought "Oh no the
jig is up,
fooling nurse Weebler was going
to be tough!"
So I opened my mouth for
the temperature stick,
and prayed it be higher
than 98.6.
Seems I've been caught
there's no place to hide,
now everyone will know I
told a big lie.
Then all at once I started
to moan,
hoping nurse Weebler would
send me right home.
But she looked at me and shook
her head,
"I think we'll call the doc,"
she said.
Oh my goodness now what
shall I do?
It's time for me to tell
the truth.
So I swallowed real hard
and began to confess,
but nurse Weebler said,"Tommy
I already guessed."
"You're not really sick there's
no tummy ache,"
"You just got bored and
needed a break."
"Remember nurse Weebler is
smarter than that."
"Now gather your books
and get back to class!"

Really cute. If it only really happened like that. But I am sure that many kids were cut a break in their younger years when they tried something stupid that was so obvious teachers caught it right away.
