I asked him to walk on water
he cryed and said he could’nt...
I told him he could
if he wanted to live..
he ventured thus..
at my request
and drowned.
we laughed amongst ourselves
at his foolish fear
of his fright at my steely
gun grey
t’ween his panic
filled eyes.....
power is what we had then,
marine blue and pride and crewcuts
blonde sweaty in the latitude
of dope crazed heroes...
paddy rice deep in floundering
nowhere ..
hiding in the forests
of our fear..
silence comes to the howling..
lyke curs with tucked tails ‘tween
spindled shaking shanks
we ran..
in horror
of our own defeat...
laughing now at comrades
crossfired dead
crying now since I’m still
alive...
singing the blues
marine style
I’ll not wear again
the uniform of shame...
