A poem for Tolstoy. Photo: Leo Tolstoy.

Poem Artwork

Kindly explain to me
The meaning of the life of a leaf
As it tumbles through the sky

Why was it born?
Why did it burst to life?
Why after having reached
Its perfection of growth
Did it immediately
Begin to fade from green to red
To burnt orange -
Before it was severed
From the limb
That gave it life?

Was it only to be absorbed,
Back into the earth?

Was it only to perish,
Back into the infinite night?

Were you thinking as a leaf
My dear Count Leo Tolstoy
When you drifted away
While sitting at a railway station
With questions still unanswered
And a direction known
Only to the nameless wind
That blew in cold gusts
Through your empty eyes?

Ronald, do you know about the Legend of the Green Stick? Universal happiness... formula inscribed on a green stick buried the far edge of a ravine... so Leo Tolstoy's elder brother told when he was but a child, and Leo believed... perhaps this leaf falls from that green stick.

To compare a human's life cycle to that of a leaf is a wonderful analogy!!!!!!
