I was but a solid slug of a thing,
Unseen by even the gentlest being
But then a mysterious spark
Was ignited, inside my dark heart
There came a vision, pure and sweet
And I knew I could become complete
I crawled alone through the night,
At break of day I saw a joyous sight
For I had found the tall trees,
My tormented legs would now be free
At long last I could dream away,
The hazy hours of a summer's day
With gossamer silk I spun my shell,
And watched blossoms spread so well
Their dewy petals to the rising sun
Then came the agony - I would be free!
My ugly body would become undone,
If I could but climb up one more rung
Then in a dark and solemn trance,
I felt my wings begin to dance
And I struggled throughout the day,
To free myself from the potter's clay
Still, it was a painful transformation,
But there was no time for hesitation
Now my bright wings are fluttering
High aloft a cloudless sky - I sing
I am a butterfly - a thing
Of beauty on the wing!
