Poetic Alchemy

The mention of "illusion" by Nordette in her review of Escape caused me to recall this poem which I wrote about 2 years' ago. And I find the quote by Don Paterson to die for:

"Poetry is a dark art, a form of magic, because it tries to change the way we perceive the world. That is to say it tries to make the texture of our perception malleable."

... What say you? :)) LOL K xx

POETIC ALCHEMY

What is a poem but literary magic
performed on a well-set stage,
its form manipulated into a royal flush
teased from a fluttering deck
of well-chosen cards.

Original Thought, the magician’s muse,
flirts flamboyantly close;
fluttering her feathers with lavish gestures,
she distracts and concentrates equally.

Like bright silk hankies from a dark top hat,
words appear, disappear,
then re-enter from the wings,
boxed, chopped and split
from their meaning;

appearing the same,
they act strangely different,
transformed by colour and tone.

The poet’s performance is cloaked in silence,
casting our minds back to a single reality,
to a shining epiphany suspended in time.

But, once outside,
the moment is gone,
the magic is lost and
drifts away faceless,
mingling with crowds on the street.

Izzy whizzy let's get busy! With pen in hand there's magic I will conjour from non-specific sand. Hence, when I write it tends to be rather bland. Boom! Boom! LOLOL...ah! but you are the enchantress of verse Mizz MP, and your pen hath conjour'd more visual magic for us all to behold, like awe struck kiddies at one of those parties...(you know, the ones with the rubbish clown twisting balloons into amusing shapes etc lol) you have us under your spell. This is pure alchemy kiddo. Outstanding!

the process of poetic alchemy is to transpose thought and reclassify the structure of "the fluttering deck" so the audience will be awed by the magic of attaining "the royal flush" and alter the "color and tone" of perception ... if the process is successful the magic it generates is not lost but assimulated ...

you transmute the reader's thoughts perspicaciously Kate, capturing the gold of poetic alchemy ...

The tao of syntax pouring the Philosopher's Stone magic from the crucible and out jumps Jung to remind us of the collective unconscious where I do believe our words are formed...a very tangible thought process pours from the spout of Poetic Alchemy, Kate...

The magic of you pen is endless!!

Yes once written the magic is gone...BUT if you go back to it in a few days and read it again and it touches you the way you hoped it touches the millions out of sight...the penning was worth it!!

Like your just did...it had put my mind in a spin...alot to think about!!

This is exactly what happens...but I could never really put it into words! The suspense unfolding as one magician contemplates the illusion about to take place..."fluttering her feathers with lavish gestures,
she distracts and concentrates equally..." and "...The poet’s performance is cloaked in silence,
casting our minds back to a single reality,
to a shining epiphany suspended in time." Wow!

A wonderfully creative write Kate~ A Keeper! :)
Love and Peace~

This is a new concept to me but after reading your poem several times the wisdom and clarity of it is finally sinking in. The images you created here of cards, magic silk scarves is so in tune with how we as artists create our work of painting words, scupting sentences and orating songs.Sweet Kate you know just how to let the words of your poetry flutter and flitter like small birds of wisdom speaking to our hearts. Beautiful.
