There is discussion to no end
As to who and what is a 'friend'.
Is it every Tom Dick and Harry
Pretty Sue, April and Mary?
With everyone we interact
Is really a friend in fact?
Of the myriad folk we Know
In our lives come and go
Many to whom we hand extend
Precious few qualify as 'friend'
The term is of such common use
Means nothing, with much overuse
So, of the thousands we will know
And those who will come and go
One day our heart will comprehend
Which ones of these are really 'friend'
If simply put, it is no other
Than a sister/brother
From another mother!
I have more than 2.6K friends in FB, some are author friends and some are game friends but we are hardly close to one another. Some were in need and I helped them out but they distant themselves afterwards for unknown reasons.
When I posted my life and death situation while in hospital with Covid and pneumonia some good friends did not respond to me. But I forgave them anyway.
Life is too short to hold grudges against friends. After my near death experience I might just enjoy what I have. Good friendships are hard to find.
I really liked the humorous quip in the last stanza. The textbook, psychological definition of a friend can be a relative or a spouse. And true friends, according to the textbook generally are countable on a few fingers, lifelong.
While social media with its flippant "befriending," seems to make it easy to create friendships, the true test of a friend is when you are really down and out, perhaps even accused unfairly, that friend will come to your aid. Take care of you in a dire sickness. Give you money without question when you can't tell them why you need it. Stand by you and give you a home, mental and physical support when you've lost everything.
Come to think of it, if I use those tests I can think of only two people who would do that for me. My only true friends.
