Destruction and devastation in Haiti after the earthquake. Many were seen walking the streets shocked and dazed. (Photo submitted by Matthew Marek, American Red Cross/International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies)

Poem Artwork

Warnings were given

On Haiti’s behalf
Poor emergency services
Vulnerable economy
All building structures a farce

Good people living
On shaky land
Fragile foundations solid as sand

Trusting the elements
They moved through life
All we have is the moment
They taught what is right

But we didn’t notice, too busy to see
Our brothers and sisters threatening calamity
It came and it hit: Haiti Wipeout
A 7.0 earthquake showed what life's all about

Quality of living and human rights
Never forgetting family
In the light or the night
Our freedom connects everything we do
We are one in this life
Completely true

Our suffering unites us
Shows our strength
Humanity’s spirit
Boundless length

Yes, Suzie, how true. Thanks for writing such a moving poem. The sad reality is that it is usually too late that many realize this, as you say, except for charity and church organizations. Excellent work.

It has seemed to bring the world into a unity of assistance sadly I think it will divide and kill many more natives of Haiti from the after affects and factions of them.
