Ostia Antica

Dinner with my family

Ostia Antica
Dinner with my family

Zia Maria prepares the meal
with the women of the house
While Zio Dante regales us
with stories of the past

Nana dressed in funeral black
sits back and observes
And only interrupts to say
that the meal will soon be served

Plates of antipasti first
Then fresh pasta pressed that day
Chianti flows to quench the thirst
Manja, manja, Zio says

Pollo, Carne, piled high
Then coffee, bittersweet
The sound of laughter fills the night
The women clean and the men retreat

A short walk to the piazza
Where we smoke our cigarettes
And raise our glasses of Sambuca
In a toast to no regrets

Aaaaah..so you are of Italian descent..how grand!
I stayed in Ostia while visiting Rome..it's only a few hours from me if I travel across the Adriatic..Right now I am looking across this azure sea( from the terrace) and recalling my days in Ostia and I give thanks for living in this scenic town ( Opatija..pearl of the Adriatic ) aware that my life has ben blessed...as has yours ..I'm sure!
