It was a January morning
when the sky did fall
I heard it on the news
and didn’t think that it was true at all

We had spoken just the night before
of the lives that we had made
We talked of future plans
and the wild times we had

We laughed about our struggles
when we didn’t have a dime
and the vultures who were waiting
as we began the climb

You set your sights and reached the top
I went another way
and I wonder if I’d stayed that course
if I’d be here today

You did always shine
with the bright lights in your face
The crowds of never-ending nights
couldn’t keep up with your pace

Beneath the cover of illusion
you buried it so well
What was happening inside
no-one could ever tell

But you were always there for me
and I was there for you
Like brothers till the end
to see each other through

I guess you knew before you called
the way that things would go
that your call was just to say goodbye
I can’t believe I didn’t know

I’ll be missing you my friend
I won’t forget it all
or that January morning
when the sky did fall

Dear Edwin,
I understand this poem immensely! The sky fell for me on a May day, 96, when my best friend graduated from this earth.
The absolute blessing for you, is the phone call your friend made prior to promotion... Count that as a huge blessing, because I wish dearly I sensed to call her before that grave departure date!
Much love to you fellow soul on this land of impermanence....

Edwin again you captured such depth in relationship, goals, a slice of life the compassion, joys and the endings beautiful with a poetic sting.
I am always caught up in the reality of your work.

Peace & Light,
Joselyn

This totally guts me, Edwin. Why is it that so many - particularly prevalent in "artistic" creative circles perhaps - become such prey to untimely death, one way or another? It seems sometimes that the more intense the fire, the more quickly it is snuffed... or suffocated. Reminds me of a bright young guy called Joshua Miller who was with us here at AD for such a short time about 18 months' ago. He was a brilliant English and Drama scholar, making good in "the indusry". Tragically killed in a car accident after only a few months of being known to us. This MUST be a song? Makes me think Rob Thomas - blimey, I love that guy! Can feel the crucible angst here. Time stands still once the sky has fallen. And yes, anniversaries repeat and compound the experience. Great write, thank you for sharing your anguish with us in this forum. We appreciate it. K xx

How tragic this poem is, an unexpected death haunts one for some time to come.

Very emotional write that takes the reader into the heart of the writer as he deals with loss, tragic and sad but tempered with the love shared in past.
