Insipid Purgatory Of Nature

Winter blahs and the flu...

The Christmas atmosphere is long gone and leaves no lasting legacy of joy

The air is bitter cold now, not the refreshing breath taking cold of early winter nights

The virginal white snow so pure once, is now turned to dirty grey and black on white

It is the time of year when the days turn to nights unnoticed because of the inane sights

Street people, heads down, hurry, exchange no greetings unless of the vulgar variety

January seems to plod on into February dragging her soggy wet garments of depression

Obituaries grow with the list of those whose poor ragged edged souls could not survive

I sit in my chair my window and watch the world’s bitterness create its own impression

Like an insipid purgatory of nature unfolds the ugly tide of civilization or lack of it

The need to give and love and smile and hug have disappeared like jolly old Saint Nick

It is to early for the flowery yellow hope of new beginnings that Easter will propose

Far too early for the first new buds of spring, it is the time of flu and germ and sick

It is the insipid purgatory of nature time of year and only the strong of spirit will survive unscathed

I think I suffer with SAD - Seasonally Adjusted Disorder - and count the moments as daylight reappears past 4.00pm on the English horizon from now on. We have had no winter to speak of here - yet, but I doubt we'll be let off that easily... a cold snap is almost certain to hit once the spring bulbs have popped up to say "Hello"! I think I would feel like this, too, Felix, in a whiteout that has been trashed. But how fleeting is the time between one "gray patch" and another and by the time you've finished planning your summer sunshine, it will be time to be putting down your deposit on it as it will only be a few weeks' away! Can feel the listlessness in this well-described scenario and the big freeze chills my bones! Stay warm, fit and focussed! LOL Kate xx

How well you describe the feelings of the "dog days" of winter. Thank you. Love and peace. Regis

i'm feeling the first signs of that flu coming on...they had no flu serum here this year, except for the nurses and the aged so it will surely find me. this is very well written, felix

having spent five long years in Syracuse, New York, I know just how insipid that long bitter cold winter season can be... February (frigid cold, no sun--at all, mountains of snow) and April (dirty, sloppy slush everywhere!) were hardest as I recall.
interesting how profoundly Nature influences the cycle of life.
nurse thy body, mind and soul, Felix, and carry on as you must, for purgatory awaits!
best wishes,
Carolyn

Felix, It's odd that down here in Texas, we pray for cooler times, and then when they arrive we curse their arrival.
I'm sure that your spring will bloom and all will be better, but for the time being, just think Spring, and doctor that flu..
Hope you feel better soon!

Lisa

This is very interesting the way you spoke of that in between period of the Christmas season and the spring. Very eloquently spoken.
