I know this isn't exactly poetry but as it is my 100th Poem and my graddaughter's 1st Bithday I want to celebrate both by sharing a the letter I have written her...

Dear Jaime Lee,

(Boo Boo, Little Britches, Poppps Girl)

I am writing this to tell you that this has been one of the happiest years of my life.  A year ago you made me the happiest and proudest grandfather in the world. When I ignored the hospital rules and snuck in to see you and your Mom, after your Dad told me you were here, I cried. I am crying now remembering.

These are not sad tears when Poppy has to leave, or ouch tears like when you get a boo boo on your knee, or angry tears like when Mommy says no. No these are happy tears which are the sweetest in the world and though you are too young to understand them yet, just like you are too young to read this letter, someday you will know the feeling of these tears and I hope you will never be ashamed to let them roll like your Mom and I.

You have given us so many special memories this year and so much laughter that I do not know where to start to tell you but I will try:

·        When you first opened your eyes and looked at me and they say it was just gas but we know better you smiled for Poppy.

·        When you first grasped my fingers with your little ones and stood wobbly and shaky but proudly for Poppy it was a triumph for me as well as you.

·        W hen you first laughed with that bubbling laugh that only you can make I laughed with you.

·        When you took first Poppys both hands in yours, and then one hand in mine to walk around the house Poppy never wanted to let go.

·        When you gave Poppy his first kiss which was more of a head butt then a kiss you almost made Poppys heart explode with love.

  • When you fell asleep the first time in Poppys arms and Poppy and Moppys big bed I knew that I would gladly die trying to protect you.
  • When you began to walk on your own and would run to Poppy as soon as you saw him, I felt the love  I had not felt since your Mom was a little girl
  • When I took you for walks in your stroller and you would play the drop the things game to see how long I would pick them up I played it just a bit longer then I had to cause I knew it was your way to play with Poppy

  • When your first teeth started coming in I hurt so bad when you cried and I could not take the pain away or when you barfed all over Moppy (will that was kind of funny), but when I see you smile with those two toofies in your face I crack up with happiness

  • When I saw you in your beautiful Christening dress made by your great Aunt Pat out of your Moms wedding dress I once more felt those old happy tears. I said a silent prayer to myself that I hoped I will live long enough to see you in your own wedding dress some day

Jaime Lee I could go on and write a book of all the wonderful memories you have given me over the past year but I think I can sum it all up by saying I love you and think you are a special little girl. Moppy and I have bought you presents for your 1st Birthday but our main present for you is our unconditional love forever.  I thank your Mommy and Daddy for the wonderful gift they gave us which is you.

Happy 1st Birthday Jaimie Lee York

Love,

Your Poppy

This rocks me, Felix!! SUPERB POETRY straight from the heart and to the heart - what could be more poetic than that? This is the most priceless gift you could give - akin to the giving of your whole self, which you have already done. I have heard it said that the grandparents' relations with grandchildren are even more enjoyable than the parent/child thing - and extra special. You are indeed blessed to enjoy such closeness, to share in these special moments of her rapid change and development, and to see so much of her and her parents. This is a pure delight. I celebrated, I think, my 50th poem here last year on my daughter's 18th birthday... the thought that she could, instead, be 27 years', having been married 28 years, scares me... but the thought of becoming some whacky uncontrollable old Grandma fills me with the warm fuzzies and uncontrollable mirth! A special relationship indeed - THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!! :)) lol Kate xx

Aw Felix! Now you went and made this Grandma cry.
I'm sure Jaimie knows just how much Poppy loves her, for an affection this strong could never be hidden.
She's a beautiful little girl, wrapped right around Poppy's heart.
Happy Birthday Jaimie!

Lisa
