I have never flown, and I never will. Airplanes scare me, not because as Sue said, of terrorism, but because of the height the plane flies at. If I am in a car, and it overturns, and I am still alive, I know how to handle that, the same with an intercontinental coach bus, or train, ship. But 30,000 feet in the air, scares the hell out of me. Nicely written Felix, maybe you should send a copy of this to all the discount airlines, and tell them this is a present from their riding public (giggles). This is a great "tribute", Felix! Love the line-length and languid style: just like those sickly "apologetic" tannoy voices... I can't think how desperate it is to be caught up in such a situation as you describe... just shows how much we take for granted, jetting round the world... we think something is "only a few hours away", but the truth is, we are covering all manner of terrains, politics and desperate situations as if they don't exist or matter, in reality. How vulnerable we are if we are forced to land in the middle of it... as you so vividly portray here! Quite a short story here - or a novel, even!! Thank you for this. A sobering thought to all of us who travel sardine-class and open-top. Kate xx

It ain't just airlines... I personally know a person, who "planned" his bankruptcy... two mortgages, ran up all his credit cards, then went belly-up... over $200,000 in personal debt... I thought he spent money before, now with no bills he's totally out of control... it makes me angry because so many people try to be honest and do what's right... and when we are, we end up being screwed...

Just a footnote my daughter was a flight attendent with one of Canada's leading airlines when it went bankrupt and left her and her flight crew stranded in Newfoundland. Just two weeks ago another airline went bankrupt in mid flight so to speak, so word to wise be weary of discount airline fares.

nice rant about a serious subject...i haven't flown since sept 11, not from fear of terrorism but because the damned airlines are falling apart and i don't trust them anymore
