A shadow flickered past my window last night
In the shadows when the moon was out of sight
Was it your memory, come to check up on me
I whispered to myself “Let it be, let it be”
I heard your voice as I walked through the park
It crept in between the robin and meadow lark
I stopped and searched the flowers and the trees
Perhaps it was just the buzzing of the bees
Was that your smile in a blaze of early sunshine?
No, just another memory of when you were mine
For a cloud soon dimmed nature’s opening act
Sadness reached but I said “Don’t look back, don’t look back”
I thought I heard someone call your name out loud
My eyes roamed for your smiling face in the crowd
Then I saw the man find the his lover or wife
Their love brought a sharp pain like the cut of a knife
Awoke to your perfume on the pillow next to mine
It lingered for a second like it had for some time
I knew though it was just the residue of you and me
So I said to myself “Let it be, let it be”
