*I saw a woman in the mall today* *Screaming at her child who wanted to play* *I heard a slap and a child crying* *It broke my heart and I turned away* *I was at a funeral not long ago* *A mother lost her little girl who�d just learned to play* *Her mother�s cries almost broke my heart* *No words of comfort could I find to say* *I saw a senior grey and old* *Pushed and pulled along cause she was slow* *My arms wanted to reach out to her* *But again I turned to go* *I saw my mother die of cancer cells* *A million tears cried, I miss her still* *I have to turn away that memory* *Though it was still God�s will* *A wife belittled in a public place* *Eyes downcast from shame* *I wished I could make him see* *Instead of walking away again* *A child grows up to be a man* *Learning from his father�s hand* *I saw the evil in his eyes* *I think I�ll never understand* *Too many hateful people* *Eyes wide open cannot see* *How short this life is going to be*

Felix,

*Tears* If this doesn't open those eyes wide shut, nothing will. A shattering, thought provoking piece that every parent needs to read. The lessons in this write are life changing--POWERFUL!!!!!!!!!

So many words of truth in this write. So much of this going on in this world today. Eyes Wide Shut describes a lot of us, walking away. So very sad. Karen

Well, this has curbed my flip 4th July mood, Felix :(( Laughter and tears can be so close and both are often the two sides of the same coin. I know exactly what you feel here - something just fractures inside when you witness scenes like this, don't it? I find a sudden rush of indignant anger flushing my face which is hard to control sometimes. But I know that, when push comes to shove, there are times also that I have behaved unforgiveably and would want NO ONE to have witnessed it. So, there but for the grace of God, I think, often. But you absolutely nail this with the sagacity of your final stanza - right between the eyes! I never saw the Nicole Kidman film, but the title has always lingered in my mind and I think you have penned the perfect poem to go with it. True, we are sooo blind to how fleeting the gift of life and love is - we use and abuse it/them to our cost and at our peril. This makes me want to be a better person - ESPECIALLY to my nearest and dearest, who actually get all the crap. Go you, Mr BigHeart. LOL Kate xx

Accurate social comment. Unfortunately, society offers little incemtive to cure such ills, so easily dealt with in tribal cultures. We are conditioned not to act and wait for authorities to act for us.
