The old ways die hard and slow....

The Light House Spirit

The Baccareu Light house is not a home no more

Oh the light still shines, but nothing like before

Across the islands, the cliffs, the wind swept shore

The beam flashes out the dangers forever more

Computer chips send out the warning, the rocks to mark

But a brine-soaked spirit roams nightly after dark

He wanders in and out of the shrouds of a foggy night

He shirks from the glow of this new automated light

The spirit of this man’s father’s father first slept here

Memories all that’s left of that life that he held so dear.

Great write Felix.
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to read and review your poetry. I've had so little internet access over the past two months. Please know that I have appreciated your support of my poetry.

Thanks for sharing this. I found it thought-provoking and interesting.
Take care

technology is a harsh mistress. unfortunately, she has us all by the you know what. no way to get her out of our lives now. but i am quite grateful for your poem, as it reminds us of the people who for generations cared about their fellow mans life. yes felix, this is a shining example of humanity...and all puns intended. ~ sara

relatively close to where i live, out on Long Island there are two lighthouses, one at Fire Island and the other at Montauk that have computerized signal systems ... it's sad to know the legacy of the lighthouse keeper is becoming just a memory ...

excellent poem, Felix ...

More and more the lighthouses are no longer a home to a family, simply an automated signal into the night; her charm now only skin deep and her warning sent without a care attached to her purpose. One day the lighthouses will all be torn down, I suspect, and the image that has meant so much to those who have sailed the seas for generations, will only be seen through the poetry they have left behind. Excellent nostalgic write, Felix.
Take care,
Sherry

This is poignant and evocative, Felix. I have thought a lot about this tragedy of the automation of lighthouses when a very special person, or group of persons, have lived their whole lives - as you say, often generationally - manning these places manually so that lives might be saved. A unique job for unique persons. That degree of both solitude and mystery must be something that you can't readily be torn away from - and you have described that invasive "haunting" of body and soul very well. You excel when you are sailing the poetic high seas and surviving the pounding swell, as in this write. Hope you're well, Big Man, lol Kate xx

Modern times do put a damper on the old proven ways where we all had a hand in it. Nicely done with a great touch of nostalgia.
