Whispered Halls of Silence

This was written the night before I had my first heart surgery...but I dedicate to just one nurse I know tonight...

In these whispered halls of silence

When the night is at its peak

Only nurses muted chatter

And the old and sick breathing weak

On a bed that’s known pain’s history

Where a thousand patients laid before

I contemplate those who found eternal rest

I pray for the ones who found a cure

Staring through a glistening window

I see the raindrops patter light

I long just one more time to see

Anything but this same old sight

The monitor like a shackled anchor

Beeps my life line by my bed

A nurse comes to check my pressure

Lays her cool hand upon my head

A teardrop caught her flashlight beam

Though I tried to turn away to silent weep

She pulled up a chair and sat a timeless moment

Her hand on mine made compassion leap

Then in the whispered halls of silence

meleted Icy night thoughts of pain so deep

She made my heart believe just a little

Her warmth carries me to drift away in sleep.

"I see the raindrops patter light" - you have captured something really special with these few words, Felix, and I have never thought of that before, but you articulate it PERFECTLY. And it sooo much conjures the whole mood and message of your beautiful thoughts here: tears and sadness transformed to be harbingers of comfort and peace. Just how many Angels HAVE you encountered on your life's journey so far?? Here is yet another Darling!! :)) Love it, TY Kate xx

Felix, this is such a touching poem - not only did this nurse bring you warmth and comfort, but the act of writing this poem will bring that same comfort to your readers. I am thinking of you -

Wow, Felix. As someone who's kept many a bedside vigil, this is very profound. I'm so glad you had someone with a caring hand to hold yours. It was a beautiful gesture, as is this work.

Felix,

Nurses are really angels in disguise. Thank you for this beautiful tribute to the ones who have compassion for their patients. Being a medic in the Air Force many years ago, I remember many patients just wanted someone to listen to their fears; being a patient on the other end of the charts, I needed someone to listen....and found it in the nurses. :) Bless you!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
