Spirits Stirred

Over two hundred victims of the sinking of the Titanic were buried here in Halifax in Catholic, Protestant and Jewish grave yards, the majority could not be identified so they were given a number on their tombstone instead. When the movie of the great ship sinking came out tourists and locals alike came to the cemetaries and some even took pieces of the sod as souvenirs. Disturbing to say the least.

Spirits Stirred

Screams again sometimes haunt the nights

Awakening those souls who hallowed slept

In the granite forest of Halifax consecrated hills

For years no spirits there have wept

Nameless numbers chiseled hard in stone

The ones whose bodies still unknown

They were the victims of the fateful Titanic sinking

Buried far from families, unmarked, alone

Two hundred or more souls delivered

From the Atlantic’s ice cold grip

Souls offered peace with their maker

Those who died on that icebergs famous rip

Yet Hollywood found the secret resting place

Of the spirits of children, women and men

Bright lights, prying cameras and tourists

Trampled all new their blanket of green

Now in Halifax we still remember them

These adopted citizen souls long past

We kept silent vigil over their memories

So their grace with God was cast

Yet Hollywood found their secret resting place

Of the spirits of children, women and men

Bright lights, prying cameras and tourists

Trampled all new, natures own blanket of green

So now the spirits dragged up souls

Tourists grabbing souvenirs of dirt and sod

How macabre is the heart of man

Who even defies the will of God!

profiting over the dead is deplorable ... sometimes people want to personally secure a piece of history but not at the expense of upsettling it's resting plave ...

Chilling. Was not aware of this shameful behaviour. Sad to say
that morbid curiosity is part of human nature. Men have been profiting by it for centuries. I would not want a souvenir of people's misery caused by negligence and greed and profiting by it
surely brings evil. Very well-written, the mood is palpable...Lin

Felix, I enjoyed this write very much, and the mood you set was that of a hallowed peace...only to be corrupted by the heart of man as you so well put it in the last line above. Well done.

Felix,

Lower than low...robbing the dead for a "souvenier." How awful!

Shattering write, very well penned, my friend.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I once pulled a quarter off Natalie Wood's grave marker, which freaked my friends out. Of course I was much younger and more of a wiseguy in those days. Great observation with your reverent poem; and man's morbid curiosity and ghoulish lack of respect never ceases to amaze. Beautiful choice of words and I enjoyed how you repeated the Hollywood verse, as it is very effective for this particular poem.

That's horrid! Can human beings get any lower than to desecrate graves?

Yes it is so! No one has the right to defie God's decree. If God is secure wihin the spirits then, Amen...let them be! There are no restless meandrings in Halifax except for the curious visitor who wants a token of ....something I guess. Odd thing here is if you put soil from anywhere in the world into a vial with a price tag...the tourist will buy it.
Amazing how true is this poem.
Great offering today Felix.

Be well.
Susan
