What Was, Shall Never Be Again

Ahhh sometimes it is good to ponder our own mortality...

The organist notes echo in the chapel

The choir sweetly sings Amazing Grace

Strong scent of lilac greets the mourners

Loved ones hiding tears behind black lace

That long black Cadillac waits by the curb

For my last ride throughout the town

Six men standing tall and straight

Will carry me to my final resting ground

A cold drizzle of rain was falling

Seems it always happens just that way

I knew no one could see me hovering

Floating as they bowed their heads to pray

I thought of all the things I left unsaid

That now I’d never get to say again

I wished I could tell them all I loved them

Perhaps it might have eased their pain

Now the cold clumps of clay resonate

And the small crowd drifts away

They’ve said goodbye to all that was

To exit from this place of death where I must stay.

Never go to sleep on an argument or with a bitter taste in your mouth, my grandmother always used to say. I will be eternally grateful for that...everything should be said that needs to be for both souls 'peace of mind'. You have indeed covered a subject that many avoid, with grace and eloquence. Well done Fee. Love Panda :)

Fee, this is a tasteful take on mortality -- you did a beautiful job with a difficult subject. Well done, my friend -- only I hope this doesn't come true for a long, long time!

Ooh, I love the view of this poem, it instills a deep message within the reader, one that is indeed wise, to never leave things undone, for we do not know our fate, and as Ted said the comment about the 75 year old couple who always said "I Love You" before sleeping was exceptional, when my husband and I have an arguement I have a difficult time sleeping if I did not tell him I loved him...a great reminder to all! Enjoyed this one very much.
Blessings,
Joyce Bowling

What was left unsaid. Hmm ... that's the problem. I like the comment about the 75-year-old couple who always said "I love you" to each other before sleeping, just in case. Great write, Fee!

Awesome imagery displayed here.

thought of all the things I left unsaid

This verse should be a wakeup call to those who still have a chance to express their feelings.

Wonderful write.
