Secrets Buried In The Underwear Drawer

By: Felix Perry

In her bottom dresser drawer

Beneath her stack of underwear

Way back in the farthest corner

She hides what she once held dear

All that’s left of what was then

A single love letter old with age

A picture of them holding hands

Love captured on a history page

A sweet love poem he wrote her

The last one she didn’t burn

Something made her hold back

She knew for it she’d someday yearn

The tiny diamond promise ring

He gave her that Christmas Eve

Tarnished now just like her heart

She rubs it gently on her sleeve

Then the faded newspaper clipping

“Head On Crash” the headlines blare

Thirty years hidden in a drawer

No one knows he still lives there!

Awesome poem you have penned. There are many secrets that people have buried in their beloved underwear drawer. This was a powerful write of things that have past.

Thirty years is just so sad. I don't think if he loved her he would want her to pine over him that long, if he loved her. How sad.

Fee:

That title just begs the reader to delve in. A sad one indeed of young love cut short, it's flame hidden away but not extinguished. Full of emotion.

Kathy

Oh Fee, this one gave me goosebumps. What a lovely and melancholy write -- your heart just goes out to this woman and her sadness is something you can feel. That's the mark of a great writer. Well done!

CJ

I am always touched by a tragedy involving love and you tore it open with this one.The reveiwer myut feel the pain here and, like the old songs with the screeching tires and the heartbeat of a drum and "Johnny Angel" is no more. We come from that time and we knew passion was real.
Love,
Susan
