A memory from long ago...

Poem Artwork

Two Half Empty Wine Glasses

Two empty wine glasses and candles so romantic

The residue of shared love, oh passion’s sight

A dozen roses in a vase with a thank you card

That’s not my name and I wasn’t here last night

She told me that she didn’t feel like company

She said last night she wanted to be alone

I sat there like the fool I was all evening

Hoping she might change her mind and phone

Next morning I thought I’d make it special

I brought sweet croissants, fresh coffee just for two

I used the key so long ago she gave me

Sadly much too late I realized we were through

For two glasses and the candles told her story

So did the two bodies sleeping in her bed

I softly whispered goodbye as I was leaving

Oh Lord I wonder what it’s like to wake up dead…

You wrote this with such power. This is a reality to many people, especially the wait and then the ending, the disappointment. You have captured the moment accurately and perfectly.

A little slice of reality and life. A well realized poem that captures the sadness of a single moment very well.

I'm with CJ, Felix... and all those who have expressed the WOW! factor. This leaves me reeling and speechless... the ending is just so powerful, given the excellent build which draws us in phrase by phrase. Such a real write - THAT'S what makes the ending so shocking... as to which way round the circle death might be intended to strike. I hate that it should be so sad a poetic expression, but, have to say, as so often with your melancholia, this is one of your very best. The writing is so taut and measured. Excellent, Darlin... and hurry back to the warm! :)) K xx

Oh this is good! ...and your ending sent my mind to a murder scene...and then it flipped over to a crying towel with a sad muse to mutter...and then I realized it was your write! LOL!
You sure have a way with words!
Loved it!
Love and Peace~

Wonderfully written Fee. The last line, to me, expresses what the writer is feeling about how he himself will feel the next morning. Am I right mystery man? I love the journerys your poems take us on.

the ... at the end lends a mystery to the memory. I've heard tell stories like these all my life and I could not imagine what that would feel like. Tragic moment caught in pen. Lady J

A sorrowful tale, Fee, but as most of your writes are, so well told that we feel the sadness, it's palpable. Exceptional write, my friend.

As always the one in the other side of the street, my glass never is half empty, always half full...but that's just me.
If you wonder how is to wake up dead...try a night of Tequila in Acapulco with a fiery señorita for company. oh brother!!!!!!
