Nine kids and two adults round the kitchen table
Church benches for us kids and Mom and Dad on chairs
Mom’s macaroni mixed with hot dogs and canned tomato soup
God bless Mr. Campbell as we bow our head for prayers
Saturdays at the Perry house, we all would have to earn our keep
Us boys, along with our father, prepared the supply of winter wood
The girls scrubbed, washed and polished, and then found time to bake
Then they’d get the parlor for Frank’s Bandstand that was understood
The smell of yeast working Dad’s home brew behind the woodstove
The smell of his wine scented pipe tobacco on the evening air
Don Messer on the black and white TV, Mom knitting beneath a lamp
Ah life was good and simple back then, we had so much to share
Bedtime call at nine o’clock, we’d line up for the bathroom sink
Then peanut butter sandwiches for our snack and a cup of tea for Dad
Now each and all down on our knees to say our bedtime prayers
Smiling, I look back now, I guess things weren’t really all that bad.
Love it!
People are more isolated today, even in families, even children!
Lovely tribute and thought-provoking piece.

Nice reflection of a time when life was so much simpler, and more appealing in many ways.
Grace and peace to you

I loved this memoir, it speaks so eloquently of your wonderful life as a child. So nice to be able to look back and have a feeling of security and fondness.
The only goodness in my childhood, was my Nana, my Italian grandmother. She was the light at the end of the tunnel..But you know, I survived and I pray that I did a good job with my children, so they look back as fondly as you have here.....
Peace, Love, and Light to you and yours,

We have many memories and lots of things to be thankful for. Times were different when we were kids. I'm glad we were together for those years. Mom and Dad never let the hard times change our way of life. Even though Dad seemed to be out of work each winter, there was always something too eat, if they couldn't afford to buy us new clothes, Mom would make us clothes, at Christmas we always had at least one toy under the tree (some of which I still have). They made sure that we went to church, said our evening prayers and had our weekly bath. The Sunday drives for pop or ice cream, or the picnics on the beach and clam bakes, Mom's potato salad (God I hate onions)and the yearly trip to P.E.I. I wish everyone had the experience of growing up in a big family in simpler times.
So many memories Bro,
Love ya,
John
Macaroni it's still my favor meal

Love Peace and Joy Hugss to you always...Yolie
This brought me back in time, my friend. There was eight kids in my family, me being the oldest I had to grow up fast! Mama had to go to work and me and my sister Frances had to share in the cooking and cleaning. When other children were out playing Frances and I were mopping floors! I'm not complaining, it taught us responsiblity. My sister Frances is now living in Honduras in charge of a large company, I worked as a CNA for many years, my brothers and sisters all have good jobs. We all turned out well. Thanks for taking me back in time, Fee. These are memories that live within our hearts that no one can take away. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your childhood.
Blessings,
~Linda
