Through A Mother’s Eyes
By: Le Roy
Got to get fire burning in the stove
Mixed and kneaded bread rising on the back
Water boiling for husband’s tea
Breakfast for him and a little for me
Pack his lunch and he’s out the door
Hoping he gets a few more weeks in
Not much work so the layoffs start
Breaks my heart to see we can’t win
Nine mouths to feed from one to nineteen
Down the stairs they come a few at a time
Serve them porridge and molasses on toast
A nickel for their recess can’t afford a dime
Plastic bags over socks inside of boots that leak
Hand me down clothes and a paid Catholic school
I have to make shirts and ties and tunics as well
Those nuns who make fun can sure be so cruel
Oh well today is Friday and the weekends almost here
The young ones will play outdoors without a care
The teenagers will clean the house from top to bottom
So they can dance to Bandstand and root beer share
Now stick the bread in the oven, wash a sink full of dishes
Make six beds quick as a wink and drag down laundry to do
Wish I had a fancy ringer washer like the woman next door
No money for that so this scrub board will see me through
Now darning, and ironing, and patching work clothes
The baby needs changing and Mrs Lindsay at the door
Clothes hung out to dry and heave a relieved sigh
A nice cup of tea Mamie, then later I’ll scrub the floor
Get supper on the stovetop more wood for the fire
Put baby down for a nap the kids soon will be home
So tired but no time to sleep and there goes the phone
Sent a money order on Wednesday but no mercy is shown
Take off your school clothes before you go out to play
Peel potatoes and carrots, onions to flavour the stew
I know some of the kids will turn up their noses
They don’t like it I know but it’s the best I can do
Now supper is over and the young ones are in bed
The teens work on their homework and the lunches are made
A little I Love Lucy on TV and I try hard not to yawn
That’s my life and I love it and with no other I would trade.
