The Summer Days of Youth
By: Fee
I remember lazy summer days
With no complaints of being bored
Just happy to be out of school
And sweet sunshine days so adored
Mom would pack us all a lunch
Bottles of Kool Aid and a dime
“Off you go and watch the young-uns
Mind your home by suppertime.”
Then other days we’d decide
To roam the woods close by
With a cup and a plastic pail
Picking berries beneath a perfect sky
Saving money for the fair
That came but once a year
Can you taste the cotton candy
Washed down with root beer
More often then not we’d hang out
In the vacant field next door
For a game of stick baseball
No fancy gloves for brothers four
I can’t forget our vacations either
On a red soil farm in PEI
Those were the best of times
Looking back I smile and sigh
Summer time memories are gold
When our only worries used to be
If we could find another nickel
For the ice cream man at three…

I like how you take us back to share your memories. Your line about berry picking reminded me of my own berry picking days. I used to make pies with them, but the best part was eating them as I picked. You share those days with a strong rhythm and fun-to-read spirit. Nicely penned!
