Chills of Autumn

Chill of autumn forgets the warmth of summer
It takes the smiles and gives back nudity of life
Of course at first it uses its ruse of coloured gaiety
Then lays a frost with cold that ices the heart
The beach lays deserted robbed of August laughter
Silence unbearable like the loss of a summer love
Squirrel stretching his limits with fattened cheeks
Scampers as winter’s hibernation calls his name
Skies darken earlier as if ashamed to be out alone
Heavy hearted is the chill of autumn that I feel
Robbed again of the last of summer’s warmth

Interesting how we see the cycles and how they effect us artistically. Great poem, Fee. Makes me hanker for Spring already and Winter hasn't even shown its face. Love and hugs,

Eloquently melancholic! I am an autumn girl, but the earlier darkness is always so difficult nevertheless.

I am probably in the minority with my love of autumn and winter, but I can understand those who don't particularly enjoy its chillier side. Wonderful write, Fee. ~Elizabeth

The chills of autumn can truly bring a heavy heart, especially when walking the wood, but the wondrous fall colors can also bring great joy.

Just a note, for Joy and other reviewers, I actually love Autumn and it is one of my favorite times of year, as an outdoorsman, a lover of Halloween, and the smell of woodfires there is no other season quite as romantic or soothing, this write was just a peek at the flip side.

The fall season seems to be coming rather fast as this weekend here in Ohio the temperature is suppose to be in the low fifties and this great poem says it all well done as always Laura

Nobody has ever said it better than you, Fee! From start to finish a stunner. I know you won't agree with me, but I love autumn! Long walks in the cool, crisp air enjoying the fall colors and the early signs of autumn decorarting for Halloween. Pumpkins everywhere, kids out early in their costumes so eager to go trick or treating. The beginning of the long holiday season. But, then... I don't have to contend with the ice and snow either, so... I am spoiled. Thanks for letting me tell my version.

Great write. Enjoyed it immensely, Fee.

... you sound like me, Darlin... I'm a bit of a SADdo, I think, and suffer dreadfully with the loss of light and warmth. But this fine poem warms the heart - and especially vivid is that stuffed-gob squirrel who never fails to make me smile... he can never remember where he left his handbag either!! :)) xx
