Dedicated to all the lonely people out their neglected by their families. Families who believe that once their relatives are placed in a nursing home they can forget about them until the reading of the will...

Poem Artwork

Lady Regret

Sitting lost in the confines of her mind

Her self-shackled regrets in soft chain

Old tepid promises stored in her heart

So she can review them now and again

In a rocking chair in the common room

Staring at the well-worn book in her lap

Memorized verse but...still needs to feel

Before closing eyes for afternoon nap

Summer tea is always served at three

As visiting hour guests come and go

But she sits day after day there alone

Trace of smile she wears just for show

The nurse brings her a pill for her pain

Dry, cracked lips on a gray plastic cup

Lets her retreat to her garden of youth

From a mind that one day had enough…

this is touching and with a transient society today, it can be harder for generations to be near.

As I visit people in nursing homes, I see this. It breaks my heart. I enjoy visiting with the ones you speak of and listening to their stories.

strange how "civilized" society views its elderly ... native Americans respected the wisdom of the elderly ... in those cultures the elderly were the main caretakers of children, for they have patience and knowledge while the parents were out hunting and gathering ...

sad, effective poem, Felix ...

So very sad. We've lost respect for so many things these sad days, including the elderly.

My oldest duaghter has spent 10 years working in facilities like this, loving, and caring for all the residents, and it is more than heartbreaking. I Would never do this to my elderly parents, unless they had to be medically cared for daily through serious illness, and then they wouldnt be left to stare into space...As a kid I would always go to my grandies on school breaks, they lived independant right up till the last 3 years of His life, and it worked pretty well, sadly not all are so fortunate. For many, Death is a kind release. Those who jokingly say, "be good to your children, they will chose ur retirement village" hmmm it's no joke, Ty Fee for bringing to light one of societies greatest shame!!

This I can feel quite strongly, even though my age is not yet the time to go into a "home", because I used to drive for a transport service & see some folks like these u speak of...at the time I didn't think anything of it, but as I get older I feel so badly for those folks...my friend Rene has an aunt in her nineties that the family took away from Rene and placed in a NH and she is now so lonely & ready for death...such a sad write this one is, Fee...but thank you for writing it...it needs to be said and viewed...e

Fee: She reminds me of a lady I wrote a poem about who also was left behind and cried everyday for her family to come and visit and show her compassion. Thank you for sharing this and reminding all of us the importance of family even when we age. Compassion, respect and dignity is all we ask for when we age.

God Bless You,
Deborah
