Drunk Pearls of Blood

Farida Sma'ili's a rose in the early hours of morning

Startling are the pearls of blood

In the instant when the flesh is unaware

No, this blood is my own

It is sweet and intoxicating

It cries into your ears

And into your eyes

With their looks fresh as mint tea

With all it takes to kill and revive

All that I cannot say

I carried loads and dirt beneath the window of your office]

I broke down and spat blood

I smiled up at you stretched out on the road

You turned your face in disgust

Drink, heart, till oblivion dawns

As this dog called life has its way in the gutters

Every summer 'Aysha travels to Paris

Et elle va bien!

The star of the East is reborn

When Sheikha Remitti rouses the drunkards

Vienne, Chouchou, ma petit etoile

Et donne-moi

Le grandeur de ton trahison

Et laisse-moi pleurer avec toi

Nos coeurs sont sans memoire

Et nous mourons doucement

The flowers of this betrayed temple

And its thousand burning fragrances

Speak of nothing but doors slammed in our faces

And erect glistening knives on their nightly hunt

For predators

Madame Aicha, pliant, sweet and sharp as a snake

Sings of the pain of him who

After a night of forgetting

Awakes in agony

I was a crippled donkey who

On its way through dusty alleys

Broke down in front of your eyes

Your sea-green eyes turned

To be imprisoned in my martyrdom

When I shouted your name

You were embarassed and helpless

My blood has overwhelmed me

O girls of Wahran

You who wear sea stars in your navels

Nature has preserved pleasures in suffering, too

I guarded your sleep. He took you

With his eyes

I thrust the dagger deep

Into his heart

Like a poisoned arrow my hatred ejaculated

In the rival's entrails

My honour was pure

For a moment I forgot the hunger

My blood is hot as fire

For a moment I forgot the pain

You call me beautiful

Smiling your smile beyond sin

And forgiveness

I am a thorn in your flesh

Our madness is stained with love

We long for obsession

My green-eyed darling

Moon-eyed dawn

Humiliation stung our flesh

Since the day we were born

Like a poisonous spear from the dark

Ya awliya Allah

Inscribed on prison walls:

We are separated by great distances

I sought love

But all I have known was suffering

The themes of individual internal conflict, questions of morality, mass betrayal of one's own people to consort with the enemy for the sake of pleasuring the flesh and of gaining acceptance or being assimilated by the oppressor, the struggle to retain identity, the suffering and humiliation of being cast down as beasts of burden, and the chasm of suffering and misunderstanding so parallels that of the African Diaspora experience in America that it says to me the same Spirit of Chaos works throughout the world to destroy humanity. A powerful and thought-provoking piece, Muhammad, if I'm understanding any part of it at all. ~~Nordette
