*The heart's flames like sunrays on a lizard's skin* *Wind round* *The groves* *Of their lovers' thousand eyes* *Mountainous* *And drunk with ageold scarlet* *Sweetness* *Life is a dance* *From sunset to sunrise* *With overflowing* *Mintlight fingers* *The heart clings* *For seconds* *To that which it loves* *With all its might* *Let go* *If you can* *Or forget* *If you would* *Arrested dark* *Exiled time* *Like doves in mountain caves* *Lives its hidden* *Overpowering life* *Two moons* *In the skies* *Form a cross road* *That shall not be crossed* *A heart drowned in kisses* *And untouched* *Is the moon* *A rock* *That remains an ascetic* *In the throes of its passion* *Follow every eye* *Adorn your nights* *With every pearl* *A wise heart does not cry* *Over its tears* *Inhabited by time* *It lets times pass through it* *Like god's guests in an orchard* *Raised for unexpected travelers to meet* *Like palm trees bow* *To the wind* *The waves bow* *To the days' load* *Eased by their sighs* *The sea birds ride on the tides* *Like sailors in heaven's floating dhau* *A man sitting still* *By the cliffs* *Looks out at the sea* *Counting his lives* *And the ages he lived through* *Tired and sanguine* *Hungry for the day* *And beyond time* *Who is he? Ghost or caravan?* *A ship wrecked in he midst* *Of the ocean?* *Sun darkening itself?* *Or a wave on the mighty stream's shore* *As the wounds of Cyprus bleed* *Into the sun* *And Yemen's radiance* *Glows* *From afar* *Each of us* *Has* *His own Beirut* *My heart calls it* *Jerusalem* *Teeth in the earth* *Near the cradle of my mind* *I look out* *At the other life* *Which I leave* *In endless* *Agonising* *Exodus* *From eternity into eternity* *Into the void* *Which is a mountain cave* *In my soul* Cyprus 2005

How fortunate that among us in 2005 there is a writer named Muhammed A. Al Mahdi whose pen and soul together form something like a celestial bridge that allows readers to enter elevated states of illuminated consciousness where one may not only witness the essence of the meaning of humankind's ongoing spiritual journey but embrace it--despite all inclination to the opposite--with deep rapture and appreciation. With CYPRUS, one can only kneel humbly upon that bridge and stare with joyful wonder.
