Where were you bound Jimmy,
some southbound train
or thumbing it
down Ventura highway?
You always loved the sun
a fair weather bird
your wings a bedroll on your back
stashed behind my couch
just like the song

You loved this barefoot flower girl
as much as you were able
wove a crown of daisies
and violets for my hair
strummed lullabyes
when the sun went down
head in the clouds
and eyes on the stars
restless as the wind that blew you in

You liked the holes in my jeans
played with the strings
drew circles on my bare skin
as if you didn't know where to go
that dreamy look in your eyes
sleepy for having to stand still
ready to move yet wanting to stay
You buried your nose in my hair
breathed patchouli oil and incense

I watched you go one day
to strains of "Knights In White Satin"
watching your cool laid-back stride
boots happy to be touching pavement
all roads leading to somewhere
Where are you bound, Jimmy?
Hope you found where you belong
Or are you still riding the wind
trying to find your place in the sun?

A most astounding cameo that many of us will be able to relate to with a fair degree of nostalgic pleasure, Linda! :)) You have painted this character portrait so very well with so few images and yet he lives and breathes as both the unique "Jimmy" that he is and as that fanciful youth that so many of us girlies fell for. I don't know what it is, but both you and Dale have such deep cinematic qualities that are also journalistic in the sense of a rolling reportage - you more concrete and narrative than Dale who is very conceptual. But your "flavours" affect me in similar ways... or is it the glass or two of Valpolicella that I've just drunk?! :)) How I love that image: "a fair weather bird / your wings a bedroll on your back / stashed behind my couch / just like the song"... says so much and lines I would love to snitch sometime!! Love this, thank you. Kate xx

Wow! Lovely visual feast, Linda, takes one back to where we wish we still were or perhaps wished we were then .. and the band played on .. thanks for the memories ..

Linda, this beautiful poem sings; and it does so with the nostalgic, sweet melody of a tear that falls... only to be caught by a warm, irresistible smile. It is good to read you again.
(Thank you so much for your kind words and good wishes!)

Well I have to say, your choice of "Knights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues is the perfect compliment to your writing. I read a review below by Mr. Felix Perry and I so have to agree. I think so many of us who grew up during that era remember just as much of the good as we do the bad.

You have represented a very fair balance to life with this poem. And a marvelous theme of reminiscing.

I think we've all known at least one Jimmy in our lives. And I also believe we've all wanted to be Jimmy once in a while.
There are those that possess free spirits, and those that do their best to free their spirits.
This is beautiful carefree work, that all can relate to, in one way or another.

Oh LInda this one really touched at the heart of an old hippie. So many good things came out of that period in history and it is a shame that most only remember it for the Vietnam war and burn the bra. Romance lives in your heart and soul and is so well expressed in your writing. Great work.
